Your home is a sanctuary, it is a reflection of who you are. It is the place where you should feel the most comfortable. You spend so much of your life at your home so it should be taken care of as it provides and takes care of you. Creating a good energy flow through your home really does make a difference. Have you ever been in someones home and just felt like you could breathe good, like it was so inviting and welcoming? Or have you been in a home where it’s stuffy and uncomfortable or maybe you just didn’t have a good feeling when going inside? It’s all connected to the energy that is flowing, or not flowing, in the home.
Indoor air quality can be 10 times worse than outdoor air quality so it’s a good investment to find ways to not only improve the energy of the home but to also reduce the toxins that fills our homes for our health and wellbeing.
I am constantly looking for ways to increase the positive energy in my home and have found many useful tools to help create an enchanting positive home space that I would like to share with you. These will help increase your homes positive energy flow and raise the spiritual vibration of your abode.
Reduce clutter
The things we bring into our home should be intentional. Everything in your home should be beautiful to you, serve a purpose, or bring you joy. Take inventory of what you have in your house, are your cabinets so full that things fall out when you open them? Is your closet bursting at the seams? Do you hold onto every sentimental memento from your childhood? What about all those gifts you receive throughout the year, do you only hang onto them because so and so gave it to you? If you are like most American households then the answer is probably yes. The average household has over 300,000 items in it! Wow! That’s a lot of stuff!
Reducing the clutter and the things that do not serve a purpose opens the door to allow better things into our life. Don’t let your “things” be the only thing that defines you, release old things you are holding onto that are not of purpose to you today. Take a weekend to go through your house and get rid of stuff. And then do it again. And once again. Because the first time you go through you will most likely still be holding onto things that you probably don’t use or need. If something is broken or does not work and you are not going to fix it then get rid of it immediately as it holds negative energy.
Our attachment to material things holds us back from enjoying the things that truly matter in life. Now I’m not saying you need to become a minimalist (although cheers and hooray to all that are as I am aspiring to be!) but learn to let go. Donate items to someone who will find value in them. Your home will become more open and less stagnant when you remove some of those unnecessary items. I have gotten rid of over half of my belongings over the past year and I’m not done yet. I love knowing that someone else can find value in the things I don’t use and it’s made me become more intentional on the things I do purchase. I find myself not buying “stuff” just because it’s pretty or I like it.
Plants
Plants are incredible!!! I love them so much!!! They are so beneficial for your well-being and your home. You should try to bring in as much from the outdoors as possible into your home so that you are more connected to nature and our great Mother Earth. I used to have a bad problem of not being able to keep my plants alive for very long but now I treat them as family and I tend to them and make sure they have enough water and the right growing conditions. My home used to be adorned with crazy knickknacks and eccentric art pieces but now there are plants everywhere and I love it! I have hanging plants, trees, ivy, ferns and peace lilies throughout our home. They bring life and fresh air to an otherwise stale space.
Not only beautiful as decoration, but they are a natural filter for negative energy and they deflect it, only attracting positive energy. Many houseplants do not need direct sunlight so you can put them throughout different areas of your home.
A lot of plants actually purify the air and remove harmful toxins which is so important for our health and well-being. Not all plants are created for the same purposes however so be sure to get plants that are natural purifiers such as English Ivy, Boston Fern, Peace Lily, Spider Plant, and the Philodendron Plant.
Smudging
Smudging is an ancient indigenous practice that has been used ceremoniously and spiritually. It is the burning of herbs, most commonly Sage, to remove negative energy from a space. You can smudge yourself, your pets, your vehicle, and your home. It is a simple process with tremendously calming results.
You will need to gather a few supplies in order to do a smudging session for your home. You will need the herbs (again Sage is the most popular and there are a few different types but you can also use Palo Santo which is a holy wood that has a sweet aromatic smell that is wonderful, or bundles of other herbs such as lavender), a lighter, a vessel for the sage such as an albacore shell or a fire-proof small dish, and you will need a small amount of sand in the vessel to extinguish the bundle when finished.
To begin you will want to open up all windows and doors throughout the home so that as you go through the smoke is able to flow through freely. You can begin at the entrance of your home by lighting the bundle on fire and blowing the flame out so it is smoldering and smoky. Walking clockwise around each room move through slowly and deliberately waving the smoke into all corners and tucked away places, you can use a feather to help sweep the smoke up into high areas and corners.
Be intentional as you move through each space, stating what your intentions are. I like to use the phrase “I now remove all negative energy that has accumulated in this space and release it, only allowing positive energy to flow through this space” and I say it repetitively throughout the entire smudge session. Once you have gone through each space in your home you can smudge yourself by waving the smoke from the top of your head to your feet and using your hands to move the smoke close to your body. I do this on myself and all the other members of our household, even our doggies get smudged!
You can smudge as often as you like, typically a full home smudge should be done at least every couple of months, some people do it weekly or daily, however if you are feeling like you need a shift in more positive energy do it more frequently. You don’t have to do your entire house, for example if you had an argument with a family member in a particular room you could just do it in that space afterwards to remove that negative energy that lingers. It’s also a good idea to light some uplifting incense or diffuse a cheering essential oil like tangerine to infuse the home with positive energy after smudging.
Salt Lamps
You know that amazing blissful feeling you get when you are near a waterfall, it’s caused from the production of negative ions that is created from the rushing water molecules thus yielding a positive effect on those nearby. Himalayan salt lamps are essentially doing the same thing as the waterfall, creating negative ions. With all the electromagnetic radiation we are inundated with on a daily basis in our homes from our cellphones to our TV’s and computers we need something to balance out that radiation and remove it from getting absorbed into our bodies.
Placing salt lamps throughout your home will help clean the air and remove contaminants. The salt absorbs the contaminates and locks them into the salt crystal through a process called hygroscopy. The salt lamps have other health benefits as well such as deodorizing and purifying the air, reducing asthma and allergies, can help boost blood flow and increase energy levels, improve sleep quality, reduce stress and induce calm. Plus they give off such a beautiful amber glow they make great night lights and mood lighting.
Crystals
I could seriously write an entire book about crystals, they are my zing! Crystals are amazing powerhouses of energy. Not only are they beautiful creations of Mother Nature but they are great for healing and restoring balance. You can place crystals around your home as decor however there are many great crystals that you can use to help protect and promote peace throughout your home if you are intentional with their placement.
Making a grid around your home with crystals is a good way to protect it, using four pieces of Selenite or Clear Quartz , one in each corner will bring in peace and comfort to your home. A grid using Amethyst wards off negative energies, as does Black Tourmaline. You can grid specific rooms too if you’d like to enhance the energy of a particular space.
Carnelian is a good stone to place at your front entrance as it invites prosperity and abundance. Placing crystals such as Amethyst, Clear Quartz, Fluorite, or Sodalite next to computers and TV’s will help protect you from electromagnetic pollutants that are emitted through those devices. Citrine should be placed in the wealth corner of your home (the southeast corner) to invite wealth and good financial fortunes.
In the bedroom Rose Quartz should be placed as it is a powerful love stone and removes negative feelings and replaces them with feelings of compassion and romance. It can actually be used throughout your whole home but is especially useful in the bedroom or under a child’s bed. Red Coral is also a good stone for passion. You can also place stones under your pillow if you suffer from insomnia or bad dreams. Use amethyst for help with sleeplessness and citrine to help stop nightmares.
There’s so much you can do with crystals in the home that the possibilities are endless, surround yourself in their beauty and soak in the positive energy that they provide.
Air Purifier
This is one of the most obvious but overlooked, the air purifier. It does just what it states, purifies the air. Air purifiers remove contaminants from the air such as bacteria, mold, odors, viruses, smoke, and other common airborne allergens. But not all purifiers are created equally, be sure to get a high quality purifier with a true HEPA filter that is the right size for the area. Most purifiers are designed for one room, sizes from small to x-large so you may have to get multiple purifiers for different areas of your home. You can get whole home purifiers installed but they are pricey so just picking up a few at your local home store will do the job. I like to get purifiers with reusable air filters so that every 6 months you just wash the filter and reuse it over and over so that there is no added cost of buying more filters. You can let them run 24/7 or if you have one in your bedroom you can just turn it on before you go to bed and let it run all night. A lot of purifiers can be noisier than a fan so I like to get the whisper quiet types (pictured is the Honeywell Whisper Quiet model that I keep in my bedroom) which still give off a relaxing hum but are not overpowering.
Remove chemicals
Go green! Have you ever noticed all the warning labels on your bathroom and household cleaning products? They all say warning, keep away from children, call poison control if swallowed! Well that should be a red flag right there, if there are any products in your home with nasty chemicals and toxins in them then it’s time to get rid of them! They cause so much damage to ourselves and are so harmful that it’s crazy to me that these products are still sold on the shelves of basically every store! That’s big business for you though, only concerned with money, not people. Advertising makes you believe that you need 20 different products (products that contain cancer causing carcinogens) in order to have a “clean” home. Imagine having an array of all natural cleaning products that are just as effective as those harsh chemicals yet with pleasant natural aromas and are non toxic and all natural.
I love making my own soaps, cleaners, and disinfectants using basic ingredients such as essential oils, Castile soap, baking soda, and vinegar. Check out Pinterest for a lot of DIY cleaning products that are easy to make, oh and the best part, you will save money!!! But you don’t have to be a Martha Stewart to go green nowadays, with so many natural options at the stores you can easily find green products. Just make sure that the products do not contain any toxic ingredients and make the switch! It’s better for your home, the environment, and you and your family, pets included!
Color therapy
Colors have an effect on our emotions and mood. Using colors to our advantage in our home can help create healing energies into our spaces. According to Ayurveda every color has certain healing properties so it makes sense to use this to our advantage in our homes.
Using the above color wheel you can find the right fit for your needs. Painting rooms certain colors can help create a mood that is conducive to your lifestyle and helps reduce stress. You don’t have to go out and repaint every room in your house but there are ways to incorporate the colors without a complete remodel. For example, in your home office or study you may want to hang a large yellow painting to increase productivity and stimulate creativity, or in the dining room use green curtains for harmony with communicating. Not sleeping well? Try changing your sheets and bedding to a nice calming light blue for relaxation and calming.
There are professionals who will come to your home and do a consultation if you wish to dive in a little deeper. We had a color therapist come to our home last year and it was so very informative, she provided us with a lot of great information on how we could improve our homes energy. She went through each room and pointed out what small changes we could make to help the energy flow better and pointed out things/colors that were stalling energy.
Open The Door
There is a lot to be said for just simply opening the doors and windows in your home. This is one of the best ways to increase the energy flow in your home. Do it often, as much as the weather permits. To me there is nothing better than when the rain is pouring down to open up all the doors and just listen to Mother Nature. The spring brings such fresh air to a stagnant winter home with light gusts of wind. In the hot summer months it may not be feasible to do so in the daytime but at night when it cools down sleep with the windows open.
Incorporating some or all of these ideas will help shed away any negativity that you may or may not have realized is lingering in your home. Try making some changes and see the benefits that you will incur. Less stress, a more peaceful and clean environment, and increased well-being will be moving in and negative energy will be moving out!
