With so many ways and places to invest it can be a bit overwhelming. Everywhere you turn there is advice to do this or invest in that or follow these rules. And most people lack confidence in knowing what to do so they turn to financial advisors to manage their money and tell them what to invest in.

Did you know that there have been studies where they took groups of experienced professional financial advisors who handpicked stocks they thought would perform well against groups of monkeys who threw darts at a chart with the same options of stocks and the monkeys came out ahead every time. Just because someone has a finance degree does not mean they know what the market will do. Nobody does. You cannot time the market.

If you are investing any money - through a company 401K, or IRA or individual stocks or any other platform then it’s important to know how much you are actually paying in fees and how much money your advisor gets. Unless you have a fee based advisor you’re not actually handing them over any cash but it’s coming out of your pocket in fees from each dollar you invest. It can literally cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars over the long term to have actively managed funds. Each fund has what’s called an expense ratio that the higher that number is the more you’re paying to have your money in there. Just google the “expense ratio” of the fund name of what are investing in and you will find it.

I ditched my financial advisor years ago when I realized how much it was going to cost us over time and I was confident I knew what I was doing. My only regret is that I would have done it sooner 🤣

My personal strategy is keeping it simple. Investing early and often in low cost index funds is one of the simplest paths to wealth. It cuts out the exorbitant fees that most financial advisors charge and index funds have proven over time to be more successful than actively managed funds (monkeys vs professionals).

Some of the places I suggest to invest in are Vanguard, Fidelity, and Schwab. All offer very low cost index funds in traditional retirement accounts or brokerage accounts.
